BJC School Outreach and Youth Development programs are designed to meet Missouri and Illinois academic health standards. Students learn through discussion and interactive teaching by trained health professionals. Pre- and post-tests are administered with a comprehensive report for each program.
The Explore Health program focuses on improving nutrition and health knowledge so that students can establish healthy eating behaviors. The patterns of behavior that form in the teen years carry over into adulthood and impact overall health. Understanding the link between these behaviors and future health is critical to making healthy choices.
Explore Health includes four one-hour interactive sessions developed for grades 6-12 by Registered Dietitians from BJC School Outreach and Youth Development.
The program includes the following topics:
- MyPlate - Learn healthy eating basics
- Health Risk Assessment - Learn the importance of family medical history
- Food label reading - Learn how to read a food label and make informed decisions
- Media literacy - Examine food advertisements and learn how to evaluate claims made
