At a Glance

  • Audience: Students in grades 5-12
  • Goal: Adolescents learn health issues associated with tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, empowering them to make informed and independent choices
  • Four-Week Curriculum Fee: $475

During the four one-hour sessions of Power of Choice, students in grades 5-12 learn about the use and abuse of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, including the overall health issues associated with substance abuse. Armed with this information, students can make informed, powerful and independent choices.

Students learn:

  • Reasons people choose to use -- or not to use -- substances
  • Healthy alternatives and great natural highs
  • Media hooks that encourage use and media counter-ads that discourage use
  • Long-term consequences of use as seen in healthy and diseased organs
  • Resources to assess addiction and access help if necessary

Show-Me Standards and MAP Skills Addressed:

  • Classification of drugs and their effects on the body organs and systems
  • Personal, family and societal health risks from short- and long-term use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs
  • Healthy alternatives to tobacco, alcohol and other drugs
  • Methods of refusing to use
  • Ways of assessing personal risk and accessing assistance for addictions
