At a Glance

  • Audience: Course can be customized for grades 3-8
  • Goal: To educate students about fitness and nutrition so they begin healthy habits that will last a lifetime
  • Four-Week Curriculum Fee: $475

Taught by a registered dietitian, SNEAKERS is a four-week fitness and heart-healthy nutrition class designed for elementary and middle school students. The four one-hour interactive sessions emphasize nutritionally sound eating practices, cardiovascular health and fitness principles, and how they relate to attitude and quality of life. In addition to classroom instruction, the instructor gets the class moving with 15 minutes of exercise that targets a featured body system.

During the course, students:
Study systems of the body
Note food intake
Eat for energy and muscle development
Aim to prevent injury
Keep an exercise log
Evaluate the factors and components of fitness
Recognize different ways to be fit
Set exercise goals

Show-Me Standards and MAP Skills addressed for grades 3-4:

  • Differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic exercise
  • Learn internal and external body parts, and their relationships to a healthy body
  • Identify and locate major muscle groups
  • Demonstrate appropriate exercises for most of the major muscle groups
  • Recognize physiological indicators that accompany exercise
  • Define wellness and its components
  • Learn how exercise contributes to good health
  • Explain the role of nutrition and fitness in optimal health

In addition to the 3-4 goals, these Show-Me Standards and MAP Skills are used for grades 5-8:

  • Set personal goals for exercise and self-improvement
  • Analyze and evaluate the relationship of regular exercise to the development of the individual
  • Learn about strength, endurance, body composition, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness
  • Determine target heart rate
