Regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence improves strength and endurance, helps build healthy bones and muscles, helps control weight, reduces anxiety and stress, increases self-esteem, and may improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels. However, only 55 percent of 12 graders participate in sufficient vigorous physical activity on a regular basis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It’s time to get moving.

SNEAKERS

  • Length of Program: Four (4) weeks
  • Audience: Grades 4-8
  • Goal: To help students learn eating practices and fitness principles to improve their overall wellness and healthy attitudes
Students today are faced with many choices. Many of the choices they make now, especially those related to diet and exercise, are likely to develop into habits that extend into adulthood. SNEAKERS, a fitness and heart-healthy nutrition class, can help students take a step in the right direction.

Nutritionally sound eating practices, cardiovascular health, and fitness principles are taught by a registered dietitian from BJC School Outreach and Youth Development. Students will learn about overall wellness and healthy attitudes with an emphasis on improved quality of life and the role of exercise. In-class demonstrations reinforce understanding of the targeted body systems.

Session activities include:
  • studying systems of the body
  • noting ways to keep the heart healthy
  • eating for energy and muscle development
  • aiming for 60 minutes of activity each day
  • evaluating the factors and components of fitness
  • recognizing different ways to be fit
  • knowing how to exercise and stretch major muscle groups
  • setting exercise goals
Developed for students in grades 4-8, this course includes four, one-hour sessions with informational materials for each student. Schools evaluate learned outcomes through pre- and post-testing. All materials are designed to meet Missouri Grade Level Expectations (GLE) and Illinois Learning Standards (ILS).
