| Healthy eating is associated with reduced risk for many diseases, including the three leading causes of death: heart disease, cancer and stroke. However, nearly 9 million youth in the United States 6-19 years are overweight and almost 80 percent of young people do not eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Let’s take the junk out of food.
"Fun"tastic Nutrition
Students today are faced with many choices especially those related to what they are eating. Many of the choices they will face are likely to develop into habits that extend into adulthood. A registered dietitian from BJC School Outreach and Youth Development teaches the importance of healthy habits in “Fun”tastic Nutrition. Sessions include visual demonstrations, and interactive games targeting nutrition and the importance of healthy eating.
Session topics include:
- eating habits
- exercise and heart health
- restaurant eating
- label reading
- MyPyramid
- healthy snacks
- sports nutrition
- body image
- milk and bone health
- the digestive system
Developed for students in grades 1-12, this course includes six, one-hour sessions with informational materials for each student. Schools evaluate learned outcomes through pre- and post-testing. All materials are designed to meet Missouri Grade Level Expectations (GLE) and Illinois Learning Standards (ILS).
