Among youth, the use of alcohol and other drugs has been linked to unintentional injuries, physical fights, an increase in teen pregnancy, academic and occupational problems, and illegal behavior. Long-term alcohol misuse is associated with liver disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurological damage, as well as psychiatric problems such as depression, anxiety and antisocial personality disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Prevent substance abuse before it becomes addiction.

Power of Choice

  • Length of Program: Four (4) weeks
  • Audience: Grades 5-12
  • Goal: To help students make informed choices regarding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs and risks associated with their use
Today’s adolescent faces many choices. What should I wear to school? Who can I take to the dance? What kind of music is cool? Some choices can have serious consequences: Should I use tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs? What will my friends say if I don’t? What will they say if I do?

Students will learn about the use and abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs in the Power of Choice program. With this information, students can make informed, powerful and independent choices. Overall health issues associated with substance abuse will be addressed.

Session topics include:
  • reasons people choose to use or not use substances
  • healthy alternatives and great natural highs
  • media “hooks” which encourage use and media “counter-ads” which discourage use
  • long-term consequences of use as seen in healthy and diseased organs
  • resources to assess addiction and access help if necessary
Developed for students in grades 5-12, the course includes four, one-hour interactive sessions with informational materials for each student. Schools evaluate learned outcomes through pre- and post-testing. All materials are designed to meet Missouri Grade Level Expectations (GLE) and Illinois Learning Standards (ILS).
